Warzone: First Bauhaus Hussar finished!

$

Okey so my first Warzone: Ressurection miniature ever is finished! And it's the first test mini for my Bauhaus army. My idea is that most troops like the Hussars, Juggernoughts, Etoiles Mortant etc will go with this scheme, and my Venusian Rangers will go with the classic white armour instead. I think this will look rather nice and is looking classic Bauhaus.

I had some issues with this model, first of all the helmet should have a spike on top. But they are so tiny so just one out of ten made when I opened the bag with the Hussars. Need to find something to replace these as it looks much better. Also the details on the Panzerknacker rifle where very poor on this particular weapon, just this one though and I had spares but I didn't noticed it until all was glued together and I started painting. So it have to stay (and it's not that bad but all the others look much better).

Any ideas, comments or concerns is welcome so do please share them below, and hope you like how my first ever WZ:R miniature turned out.

Dwarfs: Warriors of Karak Eight Peaks

A while ago I posted that I was going with an Karak Norn Dwarf army, well it so happens that I changed my mind. Was really tired of painting blue so I went with an idea I had before of painting them red and black instead. And from what I understand these are the colours of Karak Eight Peaks, the fallen hold!

That is prefect though as with the new Dwarf book we get a model for their King, Belegar. Also there's seems to a lot of focus on him and his army reclaiming more and more of their ancestral home. So nice story and it's fitting with the quite grim and dark looking colour scheme.

I have a lot of Dwarf models already needing some paint but I will of course also buy most of the new stuff when it's all released. Really looking forward putting those new models. But that being said many dislike the Warrior and Quarreller/Thunderers kits. I don't think they are the best kits out there, but with an decent paint job I quite like the look of them. Especially if they are many in the unit.

Hope you like this unit thus far, I'm working on some warriors and the command right now and will post these up soon.

Review: White Dwarf Weekly #2 (Digital Edition)

A review of the last weeks WD weekly, this is also the first digital WD I have bought so some extra about what I think of that.

New Releases
More Dwarfs of course, this week we get Gyrocopters/bombers, a Runelord kit and Grimm Burloksson and the Dwarf Armybook. We also get some books and digital releases like the 'Wh:Battlefields Underway' which is a scenario pack for battles underground. We get some pictures and some text explaining the new releases and all looks nice and all that.

Phil Kelly
A while ago was a guest columnist in the old style White Dwarf and this time he continues with the subject of dusting of your old models and armies and bring them up to speed and keep having inspiration to do so. Quite nice read.

Carved from Stone
Here's we get more info about what Dwarf army book author Jeremy Vetock tried to accomplish with the new Dwarf book and what he likes about the Dwarfs. Could be more in-depth on actual rules and such but otherwise quite a nice read.

Sprues and Glue
Last time there was a focus on the glue this time it's on the sprue and how should think when doing sub-assemblies of certain models to paint and glue the together easier. The pictures and text is both easy to look at/read and is really informative actually.

Paint Splatter
Mini tutorials like we are used to is this time for different parts of the Gyrobomber. Many like the Brass, Metals etc. we already know probably and have even seen many times before in WD. But this magazine is for beginners as well so that we will see repeating painting tutorials is something we probably should get used too.

Rules
We get the full rules (even normal equipment) for Grimm Burloksson and the Gyrobomber, and a little hint on how to best use them in your army. Nice, nothing special but I like to have some sneak peak rules before the armybook arrives.

Designers Notes
The model designers talk about the Gyrocopter/Gyrobomber kit, Grimm and the Runelord kit. Nice read.

The other stuff
We get some more info about the rules, Bit of the week, Readers model of the Week, a talk about different Dwarf axes etc. Really nice with many mini articles in last couple of pages, all in all a nice read.

Digital Edition
I bought the Digital ed. for the first time because I cant get to my nearest Games Workshop every Saturday. So I bought it for my iPad instead and here's what I think about it, and remember I don't have the physical copy so I can't compare the same issue.

It's looks okey but not near optimized for the iPad. Tha pages are much smaller (about half size) so we get two pages from one in the physical copy. This makes some pages less interesting to look at because normally there will be a picture to go along with text for example. Here's instead we first see a picture and then on the next page the text to go with it (in some cases). Sometimes we get a page with nothing on it all or just two sentences in the top and nothing more.

So I must say I much prefer the physical copy but for there's no possibility to buy that every time so I have to settle with the Digital, which works but it's not optimized.

Conclusion
Nice read this time as well, compared to the old White Dwarf it feels like you actually read everything in the magazine. Sure it's much smaller, but I also think the content is more interesting as well. So thumbs up for this issue as well.

Dwarfs: Clansmen command group finished

$

I like to call the normal Dwarf Warriors, Clansmen like they was named before. It just sound more fitting for Dwarfs, anyhow... I have now finished the command group for the Clansmen and so because of this they are now ten men strong and is starting to look like a real unit. Tell me what you think, I'm a little extra proud of the free hand banner with an old design taken from the 4th Edition book (I think it's that old actually). It really makes the unit I think.

Please let me know what you think, or if there is anything else Dwarf related you want to talk about just post in the comments section below.

Warzone: Bauhaus Vulkan Battlesuit finished!

I continue painting my new Warzone: Resurrection miniatures. And my second WZ:R miniature ever is the Vulkan Battlesuit. Really fun to paint and not that hard to paint either, and when I finished this model I realised that the colour scheme I went for with my Bauhaus army probably is the right one.

I did two minor conversions here, I changed the barrel for the Heavy Machine gun, the old one I thought was to puny and short. Second one is the Nepharithe looking skull, just made it from a GW skull (from some kind of Daemon kit I think) and three horn looking plastic parts. It is inspired from the totally awesome looking Paul Bonner art with an Venusian Marshal and a Grizzly Tank in the background.

All in all I'm very happy with how it turned out and looking forward painting up some more Bauhaus and later more of the other factions as well. I will paint up the Bauhaus Starter first though so nine Hussars and one Angelica Drachen model to complete that goal.

As always c & c is very much welcome.

Miniature Monday: Chaos Ogre Standard Bearer

Some of you may have seen the early WIP I posted a month ago or something (probably even more) that is now finally finished! Yep it took some time to finish, mainly due to painting on other projects instead. But I finally came around and did the last bits on this dude.

So as you can see he is a more or less an ordinary Irongut but painted to better fit into my blue WoC army. I also changed the shield on his shoulder to an old 4th/5th ed Chaos Warrior shield and added another banner to the banner. Why? Well I like banners :)

I'm happy with the end result and I hope you like it as well. Will probably take some time before this unit is done as I have ton of other stuff to do right now, but I will probably add a model or two here and there just because it's fun to paint them up.

Comments are welcome as always and if you have any tip on how to further 'Chaos:fy' the Ironguts please let me know.

Miniature Monday: Dwarfs, Dwarfs and more Dwarfs

Okay first of all sorry for the lack of updates lately, much going IRL and well, I didn't have much to write about really. But I have done some painting, and it may not look like much but more stuff is going to be finished really soon but until then, here's five more HW/Shield Dwarfs and a pic on the unit so far.

Still unsure about the bases but I think I will go with an underground theme here (I even bought the expensive under-empire basing set so will try that one out soon).

Speaking of buying, I got my delivery of Dwarf reinforcements today from Element Games (awesome service and fast as hell) . And it's quite a lot of stuff, two boxes of Hammerers, one of Irondrakes and a Gyrocopter. The army book of course and three character, Belegar, a Runesmith and the Dragon Slayer.

Can't wait to put these together and start to paint them up, but want to finish my unit of twenty clansmen first and the Grudgethrower. That's all for now, more updates soon.

Warzone: First Bauhaus Hussar squad finished!

Right now it's all about the Dwarfs or my WZ:R Bauhaus miniatures, and this time I have finally finished the first squad of five Hussars with one MG-40 Light Machine Gun. There's actually some more stuff to do on these and I will show you the final result later but as of now I'm torn about if I want my Hussars to have their backpacks like the first finished model in this squad has. Or if I should drop them altogether, becasue I don'r really like them that much and they don't add anything to model really.

Another alternative is to use old 2ed ducal militia backpacks because they actually look better in my opinion and also adds some more details and stuff to the models. Just need to find some spares though. Please let me know want you think about this, because I need some advice :P.

An old 2 Ed Ducal militia, just to show the old backpacks.

Tutorial: How to paint a Dwarf Warrior

$
0
0

I have got some questions here and there about how I paint my Dwarfs, and they are actually really quite easy to paint up. I painted up twenty of these in under a month and that is really fast for being me, sure they are far from the most good looking miniatures Iv'e ever painted but they are doing their job and as a full unit they look really nice together.

So don't consider this tutorial as an advanced one, but some basics tips and really just showing how I paint mine up fast.

Step 1 'Primer'

Colours used: Black Primer, Citadel Leadbelcher (normally use WP Gun metal instead)

This model was already primed black, I will do the rest in Army Painters Gun Metal spray primer. So on this model I painted all the model in Leadbelcher, but some of the black was showing trough.

Step 2 'Base colours'

Colours used: Citadel Mephiston Red, The Fang, Mournfang Brown, Bugmans Glow, Brass Scorpion (normally use WP Weapon Bronze), WP Oak Brown

In this step I paint all the main colours flat on the model, Mournfang Brown on the beard, Oak Brown on shoes and axe haft, Bugmans Glow on the skin etc. The model does not look that sexy yet but now we have the foundation for the models colours.

Step 3 'Shading'

Colours used: Warpaints Dark Tone, Warpaints Strong Tone

This is a quite fast step, atleast for the applying part, but the most important part here is to let the inks dry before applying a new ink or other paint for that matter. On this model I painted on the Dark Tone ink on the whole model accept the skin and beard. When dry I paint on Strong Tone ink into the face, hands and beard. When all is dry you now have a really dark model, this we will fix in the next step.

Step 4 'Highlighting'

Colours used: Citadel Mephiston Red, The Fang, Mournfang Brown, Bugmans Glow, Brass Scorpion, Rakarth Flesh, Leadbelcher/Wp Shining Silver, WP Oak Brown

So in this step you basically ju re-apply the main colours again, but this time leaving the ink in the recesses. On the metal parts you usually don't need to paint the main colour again but you can go straight to the final HL instead (Shining Silver).

I didn't in this case though and something weird was going on when I painted Leadbelcher on the axe head. I got something into the paint somehow and this messed up the metal paint here. I could scrap the paint of and redo it but I didn't want to in this case, even though I'm not happy with how that particular part ended up. I also was a little bit sloppy with the Shining Silver HL:s and I'n the next step I needed to tone some of these down a little.

About the shield I went with all the same steps as before and the same colours, when repainting the main colours I painted Rakarth Flesh and Mephiston Red, the black parts remained black.

Step 5 'Final Highlights'

Colours used: Citadel Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flash, Ceramite White, The Fang, WP Shining Silver, WP Dragon Red. WP Lava Orange

So here's the final step then. For the skin parts I first painted on a heavy HL with Cadian Fleshtone and then a last HL with Kislev flesh on the most upper parts. For the red on both the cloth and shield I first paint on a HL with Dragon Red and then a really fine final HL with Lava Orange. The Ceramite White goes on the insisgnia on the shield and Silver goes as a final HL for the metal and Bronze parts.

Miniature Monday: Dwarf Warriors unit finished

Now the first of Dwarf units is finished, sure twenty ordinary Dwarf Warriors won't do much on the table, and I am going to up them to forty men strong in the future. But for the time being this will have to do. I painted this unit in under a month which is really fast for being me, sure it may not be the best looking models I ever produced but as I unit I think it looks good and I'm really happy with how the banner turned out.

I also did some pimping on the bases and movement tray with bits taken from the Under-Empire basing kit, it's expensive but you get a really unique look. The green crystals look more Skaven but I'm thinking that the Dwarfs are down in the underground fighting back skaven and goblins so it still makes sense to me. Please tell me what you think guys, all comments are welcome and helpful for me, thanks.

Review: White Dwarf Weekly #3 (digital & printed version comparison)

$

I know I'm a little late with these latest reviews, and for both the second and third ed I had the digital versions but I went on an bought the standard ones as well. Why? Because they have Dwarfs in them and I also wanted to compare the digital version to the standard one. So on to the review of #3 of WD Weekly.

News releases
So third and final week for this time with the Dwarfs, this time we get the Ironbreakers/Irondrakes kit and the Dwarf battleline bundle. So not as a spectacular release wise as we have had before, but this is probably something we have to get used to some weeks we get more releases and in some less stuff. As before they show them off in nice pictures and tell us more about them all in all they occupy six pages for these releases. We also get some info about dataslates, BL books and some info about the new PC game version of Talisman.

Jeremy Vetock
Talks about how it sometimes is hard to be a good looser in games, this is an okey read.

Battlereport 'Horned Rat Rising'
We a get a little Battlereport sporting the new Dwarfs against Skaven. Quite nicely written even if I prefer battlereports with all the facts (game turns, how many point each army are etc.) But the worst part is that we just get four pictures and I don't even know if they really where taken during the battle or just to show us cool pictures of Dwarfs against Skaven. I would like more pictures and showing us the movement etc over the battlefield. Can be hard in this short WD format but I think they can do it.

The Throng of Zhufbar
Chris Peach talks about how they went on and painted up an whole new Dwarf army of Zhufbar. What they wanted to achieve and how they thought when painting them army up. Really interesting read and these kind of articles is what I missed in the previous WD format, could have been even bigger in opinion though.

Hall of Fame
Ragnar Blackmane of the Space Wolves, a nice old miniature still holding out quite nicely even though it does show it's age compared to the new SW characters.

Paint Splatter
The same short tutorials, this time showing us how they painted some of the parts of their Zhufbar dwarfs. It helped me some actually but It's pretty much the same stuff as in the digital dwarf painting guide but a lot less of course.

Sprues and Glue
Chris Peach and Steve Bowerman talks about the art of rankning up your models and building movement trays for your regiments. Nothing really advanced but good tips for the beginners I guess.

The Rules
We get the rules for the Irondrakes, same as in the AB and show us how they work and get some tips on how to best use them from Adam Troke and Dan Harden. It does it's job and is worth the read.

Designers Notes
Colin Grayson talks about how he went on when he designed the Ironbreakers/Irondrakes kit, especially about the Irondrakes. Nice read.

This week in White Dwarf
They talk about the different grudges the Dwarfs have and three famous ones. We also learn some Dwarfish and the other small bits and bobs in in this segment like the Weapon of the Week (Balls and Chains that the Night Goblin fanatics have) and Readers model of the week (a nice FW Warrior Priest painted by Graham Shirly). We also get to see some of the WD teams hobby projects at the moment. All in all I really enjoyed reading this.

Paper versus Digital?
I much prefer the printed version, why? Well the main thing is that White dwarf is designed for the paper format in size but not on the iPad. In the paper version we have 32 pages in the digital we have 78 so every page is pretty much cut in half and this makes the Digital version harder to read and some pages looks really boring because it's just sentence in top and the rest of the page is blank. Some of them is even totally blank or just a small picture (as you can see below).

It's just don't optimized for the iPad right now, I haven't bought the Visions digitally but I hear these are better. Also I must say I prefer to read paper versions, but some issues I just don't have the time to buy in the store so I will buy more digital copies in the future as well.

Some pages have very little on them in the digital version

Conclusion
Solid issue this month as well, a lot of stuff that is interesting if not all. Some things would be better if it got more pages but I understand that they can't do a ten page battle report in a magazine that is supposed to be 32 pages total. Hopefully the Bat reps in Visions will get better, but I don't have to high hopes about this. Also If I can get the printed version I will, so I have to recommend them over the digital versions as they are now.

Review: White Dwarf Weekly #4

This issue was much anticipated for all 40k fans and we had a lot of rumours going on about this weeks release. So on with the review:

New Releases
There's not many things out this week but one big and much anticipated kit, the Imperial Knight. These huge war machines are what this issue is all about and we get to see much about how the model looks in both Paladin and Errant versions and with different colour schemes and heraldry. Two pages is just to show you the transfers and some info what is what. It all looks nice and it really makes me wanting one more (not now though I have plenty to paint already)

We also get some info about the latest book releases among them a printed version of Sentinels of Terra and a digital version of Legion of the Damned codex.

Imperial Knights
Jervis Johnson explains the history of the Imperial Knights and what they are. Jes Godwin also talks about the design progress and we get a little picture of the first concept art for them back in the late 1980s and modern one, really cool to see how it have evolved. We also get some bits of fluff about the Knightly houses who have these huge war machines.

Paint Splatter
We get some basic techniques used on the Knights shown like Gold Trim, Blue armour, red armour, green eye lenses etc. We also get a little bigger tutorial on how they painted the black/yellow/white chevrons on one of the Knights. Nothing advanced but helpful nonetheless.

Spues and Glue
We get some useful tips on how to build these quite large miniatures. Nice if you are going put one together one day.

The Rules
We get the rules for the Knight Paladin and the Knight Errant, we get the opinions from Dan Harden and Adam Troke about how to best use them in battle along with some tips. This is still an nice segment in the magazine and especially interesting for us who won't buy the Imperial Knights codex anytime soon but still want to know the rules for them.

This week in White Dwarf
Adam speaks to Dale Springer and Tom Walton who designed the new Imperial Knight kit, and we also get some words from Mat Ward about his Codex Supplemtent Sentinels of Terra. We also get all those nice little bits and bobs like Bit of the Week (Seagull from Lothern Skycutter), Readers model of the week (Shaun Davies Chimera) and more stuff. Nice, short and simple.

Hobby in the White Dwarf Bunker
This about what the team do hobby wise in the bunker of course, this time we see Dan's Ork Warbikes, Matt's Slayers and Adams Genestealers.

Conclusion
I liked it this week as well, short and simple but everything pretty much is worth a read even for me who normally are sickened tired of 40k at the moment (and it made me want a Imperial Knight even more! ). So all and all, nice.

Dwarfs: Grudge Thrower finished!

I have made a serious re-painting of my old 6th (I think) metal Grudge Thrower to fit into the rest of my Dwarfs army. Currently painting a lot of different things among them the first of the new Hammerer model which I will also will use for an upcoming painting tutorial. Anyhow here's my Grudge Thrower, hope you like.

Warzone: Dark Legion Razide finished

I took a little break from my Bauhaus force and wanted to paint something else from my now quite big Warzone: Ressurection collection. I have always liked the look of Razides in Mutant Chronicles and they are totally different to paint from my Bauhaus troops so I went with that.

It was really easy to paint up, and could be done several highlights ago but it's a model that you just want to add some paint all the time. In the end I'm really happy with how it turned out and I hope Prodos makes more Razide sculpts soon because I want several more of them!

That's all for now, hope you like. And if you don't know anything about Warzone: Ressurection check out Prodos Games website here and look at beautiful miniatures in an awesome setting.

Miniature Monday: First new Dwarf Hammerer finished!

$

0
Well actually it's even the first of the new dwarf models that is finished, and I choose a Dwarf hammerer because I have to start somwhere and I will paint up 19 more in the first batch and then probably 10 more. So I wanted to to know how I will paint them, and as my army is is mainly red and black I of course wanted to incorporate these colours here as well.

It turned out I choose mainly red though as I wanted to try to paint Dwarfs in colours they aren't  seen in that often, so I present you the first of hammerer of my Red Guard, protecting their lord and king Belegar Ironhammer.

I'm not totally sure on the theme yet so any suggestions or comments are very much welcome. One thing is sure though, I will post a tutorial on how I painted this guy very soon.

Painting Tutorial: New Dwarf Hammerers

$
0
0
This is my second Dwarf painting tutorial (first is how to paint a Dwarf Warrior and can be found here) and on this new Hammerer model I went with a colour scheme that is a little unusual on Dwarfs, but seen more and more in the latest Army Book for example. And that is coloured armour plates, usually Dwarfs have different kind of metals on their armour, like, steel, bronze, copper, silver, gold etc. On this model that is still there but I also added quite a bit of red armour to give this unit a more special look.

I even came up with an little explanation for it, or fluff even. And that is that this hammerer unit is the royal guard of Belagar Ironhammer and is called the Red Guard. They colour their armour because of all the blood their ancestors have spilt during all the battles and wars fought in Karak Eight Peaks. Or something like that, writing fluff isn't my cup of tea, so if anyone will help me with that feel free to do a comment below.

Anyway enough of this and on to the actual tutorial.

Step 1: Undercoating

Colours used: Army Painters Gun Metal Primer

I used Army Painters Gun Metal and sprayed it on, really easy and nice result. Be careful though as AP s Spray Primers don't work like GWs for example. Read the instructions closely!

Step 2: Base Colours

Colours used: (All is the new Citadel paints) Balor Brown, Balthasar  Gold, Warplock Bronze, Scorpion Brass, Mephiston Red, Bugmans Glow, Mournfang Brown

Here I paint on all the main colours on the model, I think the picture shows where all the colours go, but I use Warplock Bronze for the scale mail and Balthasar Gold for the details that will be in gold. Bugmans glow is the base colour for the skin parts in the models face and parts of the arms, and Balor Brown is for the beard. Here you can use pretty much any other (that works for beards of course) colour if you want, but I will go for a dark blonde look here (Other colours I often use for beards are Skrag Brown for a reddish brown look, Mechanicus Standard Grey, Rakarth Flesh for a white beard etc.).

A final thing to do in this step before shading is to paint the scale mail with Brass Scorpion, I did this by carefullt drybrush it so I leave a little of Warplock Bronze in some of the recesses. Sorry that I don't show this in the picture above, but you will see the result after shading in the next step.

Step 3: Shading

Colours used: Army Painter (Warpaints) Dark Tone and Strong Tone.

I first wash all the metal parts with Dark Tone, but not the gold and bronze. When the first ink is dry I wash the hammer handle, beard and red parts of the armour and the bronze parts with Strong Tone. The skin you can leave if you want to or wash with the Strong Tone ink, in this case this was easier.

Step 4: Repaint base colours and first Highlight

Colours used: Citadel colours; Balor brown, Brass Scorpion, Mephiston Red, Bugmans Glow, Mournfang Brown. Warpaint colours; Plate Mail Metal, Greedy Gold

In this step you re apply the base colours again but you leave the shading where it should be, like in the recesses. There are some exceptions here though, the metal parts is highlighted with a lighter metal colour in this case Plate Mail Metal. The gold is highlighted with WP Greedy Gold

Step 5: Second Highlight

Colours used: Citadel Colours; Balor Brown, Rakarth Flesh, Reikland Fleshshade, Cadian Fleshtone. Warpaint colours; Pure Red

I make one more HL, Pure red on the edges of the red parts as well as the lower quarter of the ruby's. The flesh is highlighted with Cadian fleshtone and the beard are highlighted with Balor Brown with a little Rakarth Flesh mixed in (something like 75/25 mix). I also do the last wash in this step and that is Riekland Fleshshade on the gold areas, this makes it a little more red. When dry you can HL with Gold again before the next step but it isn't necessary (I didn't in this tutorial).

Step 6: Final Highlights and details

Colours used: Citadel colours, Troll Slayer Orange, Ceramite White, Kislev Flesh Warpaint colours; Shining Silver, Matt Black,

Now I do the final Highlights, Orange on the edges of the red armour and in the bottom of the ruby's, in the opposite corner of the ruby I first paint it black and then a white dot on the top of the stone in the black area. On all metal parts, bronze parts and gold I now do a fine edge highlight with Shining Silver. For last I paint the eyes and makes the base and the miniature is completed.

I usually don't post other peoples youtube videos but this one actually relates to me and this blog a little. The clip is one of many that TheSustainableCenter does and this one is part of his Empire Army Book review. All of them is really nice and I do recommend all of them so go an visit his channel check some of his more than 300 video clips.

Oh and why does this particular one relate to me then? Well he uses a picture of my War Altar of Morr during the review of the Arch Lector. Really surprising to see it there, and flattering.

Miniature Monday: Bauhaus commander Angelika Drachen finished

$

For a woman of such young age and understated beauty one may be forgiven for underestimating Angelika's military credentials and battlefield prowess. Drachen though will not forgive you or you military inabilities, no matter your rank, sex or age. If you are the General of a Bauhaus force and you are failing you will pay and pay quickly with a bullet to the head, your forces will then move on to many great successes and honours. You will be quicly forgotten. They and she will not!

That text was taken from the Warzone: Ressurection site and I thought it was nice to have some sorts of introduction to this woman, which is the commander and lord model in the Bauhaus Starter set for WZ:R. I haven't seen her in the Mutant Chronicles universe before so I think it's a new character.

As a model I like it for it's simplicity, you get the head I used and another helmeted version which is probably much easier to paint. However I wanted to try to paint a woman's face, because I haven't done that in years and is something I don't think I'm particularly good at. This one turned out okey I think, it's a hard model to paint because the details is so tiny, and many of them I didn't even see or recognise what it where until I looked at her artwork in the Rulebook.

And down below you can see how my Bauhaus force is looking right now, in the pipeline is a test model for my Venusian Rangers and five more Hussars to complete my Bauhaus Starter set.

Review: Warhammer Visions #2

$

0

I know this review is a little late but here it goes. Second issue of Visions and maybe I like it better this time because this time we get a lot of Dwarf stuff, but other than that the formula stays the same. So on to the review.

Main release
The main topic this time around is much more interesting for me as a Dwarf player/collector. We get 59 pages of nice Dwarf miniatures, both lone models as well as pictures of whole armies and battles. The pictures is nice and all, but if you have all the WD Weekly with the Dwarf releases, the Army Book and maybe even the digital Dwarfs Painting Guide, I think you have already seen most of them. I think it was better pictures here than in the last issue, but I think this segment could be much more interesting because as I said, you have probably seen most of the pictures already.

If they mixed in some more colour schemes in here, banner designs, rune designs etc. It would have been much more interesting.

Forgeworld
Typhon and the his Terminators the Grave Wardens, some Iron Hands and some Vehicles. They all look nice but we have seen it before, eight pages.

Army of the Month
It features Damien Pedley's really large Imperial Guard army with some Grey Knights. Really nicely painted and some awesome conversions in there as well, the Death Cult Assassins and Inquisitor retinue is one of the coolest things in this Visions issue. Twenty pages, but it's all good. I just wished they had more text in there, but visions is all about the visual I guess.

Parade Ground
We get a lot of nice pictures from Golden Demon in Memphis, good mix of 40k and Fantasy on 52 Pages. One of the coolest is the Eldar Harlquins which won Gold in the 40k Squad Category.

Battle Report
Horned Rat Rising is this one called, and oh so cool it would have been if they continued and written a nice narrative about this battle. We don't get that though, just as the last one we get very little text. The little text we do get is about some things happening on the battlefield. No overview of the table and with the little text snippets we get we don't have any idea of what is really happening in the game. Suddenly we know which army won and that's it. Really disappointing, make me actual battle REPORT, this is just a lot of pictures taken from the same game.

Edit: When I took pictures for this review I also realised that the Battle Report is the same as in WD Weekly #3! Really strange, we get to few pictures in one of them (Wd Weekly) and no text in the other (Visions). So if you put those two together you actually get a real battle report instead, crazy. Why not just do a decent Battle Report and have it in the same magazine!

The same Battle Report in both Wd Weekly #3 and Visions #2 but in different styles. One lot of text and no pictures and one with almost no text but a lot of pictures, crazy.

Kit Bash
It's about Tau Battlesuits, I don't know that much about them but it seems there's isn't much conversion going on on the actual models, but rather on the bases which I find a little odd. Nice models though, 20 pages.

Blachitsu
It's like is usually is, we get to see another Inquisitorial Warband, this time by Mikael Silvanto. It looks nice but I think they could do something more with this articles. 6 pages.

Dark Eldar Kabals
Here they show us four different looking Dark Eldar armies, they look nice and they don't overdo it. 14 Pages

The Dwarf Throng
Here they show us the old miniatures in the Dwarfs range, in the same Eavy Metal colours we all have seen so many times before, don't understand the need for this segment/article at all.

Paint Splatter
Some easy and nice tips on how to paint the Dwarfs of course. The Dragon Slayer, Belegar, Dwarf Ironbreakers and Irondrakes, Longbeards and the Gyrobomber. They tips isn't bad but if you have the first three WD Weekly or the Dwarf Digital Painting Guide you already have these mini tutorials. A big let down for me who have all that already.

Conclusion
So did this issue of Visions change my mind since the first one. In short, No. I did find this issue more interesting than the last, and I'm more accepting towards what they try to achieve with Visions. However I'm not accepting the fact that a lot of the stuff in this magazine is pictures and tutorials already found in other places (Edit: They even use the same Battle report!), be that in a Digital Painting Guide or WD Weekly. I still think there's to little text, especially for articles like the Battle Reports.
